Signing Naturally is a new video-based American Sign Language curriculum that provides ASL instruction for grades 7 through 12. The course contains grade-appropriate videos, quizzes, and hands-on activities that teach students how to sign naturally and understand the language. In addition, the curriculum includes a testing program that uses state-of-the-art technology to measure computerized testing proctoring from any school or public library. In November 2000, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) and Signing Naturally created a first-of-its-kind curriculum based on analysis of student test results and student progress reports. The curriculum was designed to guide students through three phases: vocabulary building, grammar building, and fluency. Students received points for correct answers and points deducted for incorrect answers on tests designed to measure their skill development as they progress through the curriculum. The testing program was used to measure student progress in the classroom and track students' performance to insure that all students are on an equal footing. The curriculum has been developed by experienced professional educators who have developed, taught, tested, and developed other materials for learners with disabilities. Some of their experience includes work with preschool through high school learners who have emotional or learning disabilities. The curriculum receives continuously increasing reviews from educators, parents, and students. Signing Naturally incorporates a vocabulary approach where each student learns 40-50 cognates (compounds actually used in the language) including words important for each grade level. In addition, students learn word root signs as an initial entry point into reading, writing, and speaking. In this way students begin to recognize words as they appear in print and develop a basic vocabulary. In Signing Naturally, students begin by learning how to read and write English as a second language. Each student who has a disability learns English according to his or her specific needs, without medication or other special tools. The curriculum reduces the amount of English each student learns through self-instruction materials that complement the Signing Naturally video materials. Student instruction is integrated with the video scripts for more effective memorization of words and "skills building". The Signing Naturally Assessment Program is a computer-based testing program that is integrated with the curriculum. This program is used to administer tests from any school or public library. When administered from a school, this assessment uses a proctor who can monitor student progress and intervention plans. The verbal answers students give on the test are recorded and analyzed by the computer system to determine proficiency levels for each student. These proficiency levels are then transcribed into a convenient report for teachers and parents to read. This data provides information on the strengths of each student as well as areas in which he or she needs additional instruction. In addition, this information allows teachers to modify their instructional strategies based on each student's individual strengths and needs. cfa1e77820
